—faces, not scary, but that show the fear inside people: fear of the unknown, fear of the loss of loved ones, of suffering, of age and illness, of mortality…the face of waking up at three a.m. to the shadows on the wall & thinking my life is fleeing & there is nothing i can do to stop its passing, the existential fear—in essence, the human face, stripped of all its glib superficial social politesse, the dopey bland mask people wear everywhere—at the supermarket, at parties, in the office, instead of screaming off the top of their heads as if they were on fire, which they are, burning from the inside out, vanishing inexorably every minute of each day…the human face that should inspire not terror, but pity, empathy, compassion…the face behind the face we show ourselves in the mirror.
