Well-written, mildly inventive, these stories touch on the
mild weirdness of ordinary life. By keeping one narrative foot planted solidly
in the “real” world, Lethem insures that you can never entirely dismiss his
paranoiac imagination and conspiratorial obsessions as mere flights of fancy.
His stories don’t leave you feeling like you’ll never see the world the same
way again as they make you aware that you never suspected that you saw it as so
weird in the first place. (Well, I needed no reminding, but the average reader
might. If anything, I would’ve liked the weirdness dial turned way up.)
