None of us had much appreciation for the kind of courage it takes to get shot for the idea of a nation, which is at best a cartel of pelt merchants and profiteers in leather, at worst a cultural association of psychopaths.
(Update the references to oil and weapons and you have a perfectly apt description of today's cartel, which is now transnational, though it masquerades behind the outdated, if quaint notion of flag-waving nationalism. Needless to say, it's still, as ever, an association of psychopaths.)
