As advertised, a collection of essays on the major art movements of the twentieth century, each one written by an acknowledged expert.  Very little effort is made to entertain you. Little in the way of anecdote. These folks know their stuff and aren’t afraid to be as dry as necessary to prove it.  Nonetheless, the ideas alone were engrossing. Could be a textbook, probably it is—or was—somewhere. Length restriction means you’re just getting an overview of the movement in question, but copious endnotes to most of the essays guide to you further sources, if you’re interested.
