There was a time
when I knew almost everything.
But that time sank away like Atlantis.
They built an amusement park by the water
near the site.
It thrived for decades.
Ever since the hurricane it's become the place to go
to buy drugs and sex.
The roller coaster is a fossil.
Beneath it, the smaller mammals
have taken over.
You hardly notice the changes
until everything has changed.
At the side of each eye
the blind spots grow
to let the necessary accidents slip inside.
We clutch these catastrophes to our hearts like pillows
when we're most alone.
The look on your face is the look I recognize
on mine—
the look of someone waiting for impact
the look in every photograph that takes us
by surprise
You over there, me over here
secretly welcoming it all along
all but asking for it
each & every one of us.
